Thanksgiving rant

I'm going to Chicago for Thanksgiving with Andrew's family. I found out today though that there won't be sweet potatos. I'm very dissapointed. I'm even considering bringing some on the plane with me.
It's going to be so weird having Thanksgiving without fluffy corn-bread dressing, marshmellow covered sweet potatos, granny's jello salad, my very own green bean casserole, and a few extra tasty Southern-made desserts. I don't even care so much about the Turkey and cranberries, because I don't even care for those here. The idea of having white-bread dressing served in hard squares, mashed potatos from flakes without the rich brown gravy that only a true Southerner can make, no extra sweet sweet potatos, no jello salad with fruit and nuts, and no Granny to offer you more and more until you're so stuffed you can't move. They probably won't even have pumpkin pie with real whipped cream or special cheesecake that only Christin can make, or pecan pie so sweet it sends you into a diabetic coma.
Nope, Thanksgiving isn't going to be the same this year. I'm having a mid-West holiday - my first ever. But at least I'll be with Andrew, right? I'll get to meet the rest of his family and if I'm lucky I'll get to experience real cold weather. My Thanksgiving wish is for snow, but that probably won't happen either. But a girl can dream can't she?

You can just stay home with us instead of going up north (sniff, sniff), I'll make you some sweet potatoes and cornbread dressing and pecan pie and sweet tea.

I'm going to make pumpkin creme brulee. Don't you want to stay home?

It's not nice to rub things in. Sorry I can't stay, I already have a plane ticket. You can just save me some punpkin creme brulee...right?

Those Yankees don't have a CLUE, do they? ;)

Holy crap. The nerve of you southerners. I'll have you know that my Mom is the best cook on the planet, and she was born and raised in the evil north. Y'all should come eat at our house some time. You'd be amazed at what us cursed Yankees can come up with. Long live the Union!

*rolling eyes* See what I'm talkin' about?

At least you don't have to work Thanksgiving Day and miss the Macy's Day Parade, the football game, and It's a Wonderful Life!

Shannon-Right on!

UJ-You don't even know what you're talking about. Maybe your mom is a good cook, but she is one in a million (I'm sure you'd agree about that). And hey,I'm not knocking Indiana, just Illinois.

Bekah- I will be happy to miss all of those. Especially the football. Though I would imagine there will be plenty of football watching going on with Andrew's dad and grandpas.

I remember the first time my partner and I had to compromise with the holidays. I am from the north but we never never never never have mashed potatoes from flakes not even on the normal days, and we always have sweet potatoes, as well as pumpkin pie, and homemade gravy. On thanksgiving we have so much great food and with my partner's family, they have one side dish maybe two, turkey, and a desert, what the heck is that all about? And his parents only live an hour away from mine. It was nice for him to spend the holiday with them but I much rather be with my own family. I hope you have a swell time anyway and hopefully someone will save you some food.

There is nothing wrong with Illinois, Rachel. We never have potatoes from flakes, but maybe this year we'll make an exception, just for you. I think you'll find it's not worse than everything you've ever done, just different. And as we are constantly learning, different isn't necessarily bad, it's just different. You will still be stuffed out of your mind, and that's all that matters.

That's not all that matters Andrew. It has to taste good too!

i've been living in the south long enough to know at least a smidge of what i'm talking about. and i'm with andrew, it's different in the north, but excellent. and yes, my mom is one in a million, but in a different sense than you mean. as a matter of fact, i'd wager that rachel doesn't know what she's talking about. have you ever lived in the north? experienced the cooking of the midwest? how about shannon? my guess is no. so open your minds a bit, and just accept the fact that the south is not the only place you can have fantastic cooking. come on, you know you want to:)

UJ- I like being closeminded on this. And no, I've never lived outside of the south, only visited. I'll keep my claim to Southern food, and will happily let you keep your claim on Mid-west food. And I'm sure Thanksgiving will be fine, just different, and cold.
